According to WebMd, a wart is a skin growth that were caused by some types of the virus called the HPV or human papillomavirus. HPV infects the top layer of your skin, and it usually enters your body in an area of broken skin.

The virus may cause the top layer of your skin to grow rapidly, thus forming a wart. Most warts go away on their own, or within months or years.

You are at a greater risk of developing warts if you have a suppressed or weak immune system, due to illness or immunosuppressant drugs, or if you are taking communal or your occupation requires you to handle meat. While warts are generally harmless, they can be unsightly.

Treatment is not always necessary, but most people prefer to get rid of them sooner, as they can be somewhat painful or embarrassing.
