Individuals with food allergies develop unfavorable reactions upon the ingestion of foods they are allergic to. Experts say that up to 90% of all food allergies known to man are associated with 8 foods: peanuts, tree nuts, eggs, milk, soy, wheat, shellfish and fish. Let us take a quick look at each one of them:
Peanuts
It is said that peanut allergy can be a problem that’s actually more life-threatening than egg, dairy and wheat allergies. Experts say that peanut allergy is on the rise, and more and more studies are being devoted to finding a cure for it. Approximately, peanut allergy is found in 0.6% of adults and 1.6% of children.
Tree Nuts
Unlike peanuts, tree nuts do not grow below soil level. It is approximated that 25% to 40% of those with peanut allergy also have allergy to tree nuts such as pecans, walnuts, pistachios, hazelnuts, almonds and others. Generally, a person who is allergic to any tree nut should also steer clear of other tree nuts.
Eggs
Among all food allergies on the planet, egg allergy is the second most predominant food allergy in children. According to the experts, as much as 80% of kids with the problem will outgrow their egg allergy when they reach 5 to 10 years of age. It’s possible for someone with egg allergy to be allergic to the white part or yolk, or both.
Milk
Milk allergy is the most common food allergy in American children. Up to 2.5% of American kids with milk allergy are below 3 years old. Casein and whey in milk are the reasons why some children are allergic to milk. The good news is milk allergy may be outgrown by youngsters when they reach 5 to 8 years of age.
Although not a chief allergen in adults, soy can leave as many as 0.4% of children with unfavorable signs and symptoms upon ingestion. Although it’s true that most soy reactions are mild, it’s not unlikely for severe reactions to occur, although they rarely happen. Some kids will outgrow soy allergy at age 3 while many more will outgrow it by 10.
Wheat
Like soy allergy, wheat allergy in adults is rare. A small fraction of the population of kids in the US is allergic to wheat, and it’s not unlikely for them to be allergic to other grains as well. Closely related to wheat allergy is Celiac disease, the sufferers of which should avoid gluten found in wheat, barley, rye and other contaminated food products.
Shellfish
Unlike soy and wheat allergies, shellfish allergy is more common in adults than in children. In fact, 60% of those with allergy to shellfish will first encounter the signs and symptoms during their adult years. Many people who are allergic to shellfish are advised to avoid both crustacean and mollusks.
Fish
It is said that fish allergy that develops in adults tends to be very severe. The problem is also likely to stay around for a lifetime. Some of the most common fish allergies include tuna, halibut and salmon, but many of those with fish allergy are recommended to stay away from all fish.
