1. Abrasive Face Scrubs

Avoid using abrasive face scrubs, which can be irritating and can induce hyperpigmentation. Most individuals who try them are acne patients, and you cannot scrub acne away. Your face is being irritated unnecessarily.

Instead, you can cleanse using a creamy wash using your hands and washcloth to wipe the cleanser off. But don’t scrub.

2. Alcohol-Based Products

Always remember to read to read the ingredient label, as per Gervaise Gerstner, MD, a dermatologist in New York City. If you see alcohol listed in the first few ingredients, avoid those products as they can be irritating, drying and can exacerbate acne, rosacea and eczema.

For a smarter move, look for an essence or toner that is water based instead of the one with alcohol.

3. Collagen-Based Moisturizers

Collagen molecule is too large to work as a topical, that is according to S. Manjula Jegasothy, MD, CEO and Founder of Miami Skin Institute. Its active ingredient does not penetrate your skin, therefore you are just getting an overly expensive moisturizer.

4. Chemical Peels

You should never put strong chemical peels on your face at home. Sometimes people purchase medical-grade peels online that are too strong for home use.

You sometimes see bad results, such as redness and too much peeling, that can lead to discoloration and long-term scarring. Sometimes they also cause allergic reactions, according to Angela Lamb, MD, Dermatologist, at The Mount Sinai Hospital.

5. Loofahs

Stay away from using a buf puf or loofah on your face. These products are too abrasive and can actually irritate your skin. If you have underlying eczema and acne, these sponges which also tend to attract bacteria, can make these conditions worse.

6. Permanent Fillers

According to Debra Jaliman, MD a dermatologists from New York city, she would never have a permanent filler injected into the skin. Permanent fillers are made of polymethylmethacrylate beads, a biocompatible, nonbiodegradable and man-made material.

If you get a complication, this is permanent. If for example you get a lump or a bump, a redness or firmness, you cannot dissolve it and you are stuck with it. That is unless you cut it out, which would leave a scar.

Dr. Jaliman prefers using hyaluronic acid filler that can be dissolved if some complications arise.

7. Products with Added Fragrances

Most skin-care products contain fragrances that cause irritation and breakouts according to dermatologists. Dermatologists use fragrance-free products since fragrance is one of the top sensitizers in the skin care products.

Yuo should avoid ingredients such as wool wax alcohol, lanolin, alcohol, cinnamic aldehyde, formaldehyde and fragrance. A good move is to use moisturizers that enhances and repairs your skin’s natural barrier. This is a great solution for those looking to boost water retention and lock in moisture, while keeping environmental detractors out.
