The study was conducted by Paul J. Arciero, from Skidmore College in New York. It involves 30 overweight women and men grouped into two.
The first group followed a traditional carb-focused diet plan, that gave them about 15% of calories from protein. This is what the average Americans typically eats.
The second group followed a high-protein diet that gave 35% protein. This group ate more food sources of lean protein. Also they boosted their protein by adding whey protein bars and shakes into their diet. Whey protein is a mixture of proteins, which is isolated from the liquid material that is made as a by-product of cheese production.
Also half of the high-protein group ate three meals a day, while the other half consumed six smaller meals daily.
For the next two months, both groups consumed the exact same number of calories and the calories were only lowered to dieting levels for the last four weeks.
The extra protein provided a weight-loss advantage
The individuals on the carb-focused diet lose a pound or two, while the high-protein group lost between 5-7 pounds. The high-protein group shed off primarily body fat, most especially around the belly.
The study discovered that individuals consuming 6 smaller meals per day lost the most body fat, which is almost 6 pounds on average. Also they shed nearly twice as much belly fat.
The research head suggests adding 2-3 whey protein shakes or bars or about 25 grams of protein per serving per day, between meals. You should focus on whey protein. Similar studies have proven that it can stimulate muscle growth, which helps drive up metabolism and promote a sense of fullness.
