Grapefruit and Boiled Egg Diet Details:

The boiled egg and grapefruit diet consists primarily of grapefruit and boiled eggs. Also, you are allowed an occasional piece of dry toast on the diet plan, with all the black coffee you can drink.

In other versions of the diet, you may also be allowed to consume other sources of protein, such as fish or chicken, a salad or a red or green vegetable, and a cup of milk.

How You Lose Weight:

The boiled egg and grapefruit diet is a very low-calorie diet. As per Juliette Kellow, dietitian for Weight Loss Resources, the diet provides no more than 800 calories per day. Limiting your intake to a few calories will help most people lose weight. But, when you lose weight quickly, you are most likely losing muscle and water, and not fat.

But, when following a weight-loss diet, it is recommended that you not eat less than 1,000 calories per day unless under the direction of a physician, as per the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases.

Also, when you limit your calorie intake, and your food options, you might miss out on essential nutrients your body needs to stay healthy.

Boiled Eggs, Weight Loss and Health:

Boiled eggs may assist in the weight loss process through its effects on metabolism and hunger. Eggs are a great source of protein, with 6 grams in 1 large boiled egg.

As per a 2008 review article that was published in The American Society for Clinical Nutrition, protein foods are more satiating as compared to carbohydrate or fat containing foods. Also, protein foods may give your metabolism a boost, while also preserving your muscle mass.

Boiled eggs are a source of cholesterol. But, the cholesterol in food does not have as much of an impact on your body’s cholesterol levels as previously believed. However, if you have a history of high cholesterol, you should consult your doctor before increasing your daily egg intake.

Grapefruit and Weight Loss

While you are most likely to lose weight on the boiled egg and grapefruit diet because of its low-caloric content, there is some truth behind the claims that grapefruit may be helpful in your weight-loss efforts.

A study published in 2006 in the Journal of Medicinal Food studied the effects of grapefruit juice, grapefruit, and a grapefruit supplement on weight loss in a group of obese individuals. The researchers reported that the group participants who consumed 1/2 grapefruit daily over the 12-week study period lost the most weight, a little more than 3 pounds. Thru this evidence, the researchers suggested that grapefruit may make a beneficial addition to a weight-loss program.
