Mothers everywhere know the struggle to get that extra bit of fat that leaves their bellies jiggly and wiggly. But, it seems like all of the crunches in the world cannot help them get back their flat stomachs.

But still, only a few know the scientific term behind this common complaint. Also known as diastasis recti, it occurs during pregnancy as the growing baby pushes the mother’s abdominal muscles apart, which is in the space around her belly button.

Some lucky mothers will watch this spot stretch back on its own, but for others, the gap often stays open after birth. As a result, tissue and organs bulge out of their middle, causing the term that is known as the “mummy tummy.”

So far, the exercise has reported incredible results. A small pilot study that was conducted by developers Dr. Geeta Sharma, an OB-GYN at Weill Cornell Medical Center-New York Presbyterian Hospital, and Leah Keller, a personal trainer, tracked the progress of 63 women with what is commonly known as the “jelly belly.”

After about 12 weeks of doing the exercise for 10 minutes daily, all of the women had fixed their diastasis recti. Some women even lost a few inches to their waistlines, too.

“We also had patients that were even 1 year out from giving birth, and they still had such great benefit from doing the exercise,” according to Sharma. “We love to hear that there is something that can be done to help women.”

Although this exercise has not been tested and studied on both women and men who have not been pregnant, this is definitely worth a shot.
