What is the first thing you drink when you get out of bed every morning? Both coffee and tea are being fiercely defended as the best breakfast beverage, and there are proven benefits to both sides. Coffee is considred to be the number one source of antioxidants for Americans and may help protect against diabetes.

But tea drinkers most likely have the upper hand, especially if the beverage is green. New research from the Columbia University’s Medical Center, have suggested that when women with breast cancer take oral green tea extract, Polyphenon E, their conditions improve.

Research

40 women who have breast cancer were randomly assigned placebo, with 400 mg, 600 mg, or 800 mg of the extract, twice daily for 6 months. Researchers collected urine and blood samples every couple of months.

What Did They Find?

Women who took the extract had a significant decrease in levels of hepatocyte growth factor, which regulates cell growth at two months compared with the women on placebo.

But, as the study wore on, the women’s levels became no longer significantly different. But the researchers noticed a trend in the women on the extract toward lowered cholesterol and decreasing vascular endothelial growth factor, a protein which, in higher levels, may signify the beginning of cancerous spread.

It may be quite early to recommend green tea as one way to prevent cancer, since the research done was small. But green tea has already earned its health benefit. A study by the University of California Los Angeles found that men with prostate cancer who consumed green tea, had lower levels of inflammation, which is associated in prostate cancer growth.
