A study from the University of Michigan suggests that our passion or obsession with pizza may be more about addiction than love. Researchers studied which foods are most likely to elicit addictive responses, and although the foods that make up the 35 most addictive foods, with pizza at the top of the list, will definitely surprise no one, the research opens important insight, to the reasons we have a harder time saying “no” to some foods, compared to others.
But there may be other reasons and explanations as to why some foods can get the best of us. Neuropsychologist Diane Robinson, PhD, stresses the emotional aspects of food. She noted that from a very young age, we become emotionally attached to food. For the majority, a food might help console us when we’re upset, be the centerpiece of celebrations and reward us for good behavior. Also the smell of certain foods can elicit powerful emotions and lead to overeating.
