Foods that Cause Heart PalpitationsThere are many factors that can contribute to heart palpitations such as stress, anxiety, anemia, fear, and even some types of medication as well as street drugs. Aside from these, there are also certain types of food and drinks that can raise your heart rate as well. Which foods can cause heart palpitations? Here are some examples that you should take note of.

  1. Alcohol. Drinking alcohol can cause heart palpitations in those with normal heart rate. Those who drink constantly can weaken their hearts because of this habit which can lead to different types of arrhythmia like atrial flutter, atrial fibrillation as well as ventricular tachycardia. Atrial fibrillation can be triggered when you go on a drinking binge.
  2. Herbal remedies. There are certain types of herbal remedies that can trigger arrhythmias when taken in large doses. One example of this is ephedra which is a type of herb commonly used to treat colds and symptoms of allergies. When taken in large doses, ephedra can lead to erratic heart beat as well as high blood pressure resulting to stroke, heart attack, and in the more severe cases, death.
  3. Dietary imbalances. We all know that we need nutrients to ensure that our body, specifically organs, is running properly. However, too much of a mineral or vitamin can cause some health issues but so is lack of nutrients. For example, having too much calcium in your body can lead to heart damage while calcium deficiency can lead to heart palpitations and other side effects. This is why dieticians are encouraging people to follow a healthy diet where they can get the right amount of nutrients in their body.
  4. Caffeine. Coffee, cola, tea, chocolate, and other snacks containing caffeine can be consumed without worrying about heart palpitations provided that they are eaten in moderation. However, consuming high amounts of caffeine per day such as drinking more than 3 cups of coffee in a day can lead to heart palpitations, anxiety, and sleeplessness. If you’ve been suffering from heart palpitations when drinking coffee, you should cut back on your intake until the symptoms disappear or you can look for a healthier alternative that will keep you alert minus the palpitations.
  5. Fad diets. There are plenty of fad diets today that claim they can help you lose weight in just a few days or weeks. If you have been suffering from arrhythmia, it is best that you skip following these diets as they can trigger heart palpitations. High protein or liquid-based diets can tamper with the electrolytes in the body. This in turn can cause changes in your heart’s electrical system. It’s important that you consult your doctor first if you are planning on making changes to your diet to ensure that your new diet won’t trigger heart problems.
